A Bit of Bra History:
The idea of a bra - although not as we know it today started as early as 2500BC where female warriors in Crete fashioned a garment that uplifted their breasts, pushing them upwards and outwards. Moving forward, women in Greece and Rome began to strap bands around their breasts in order to minimize
size and keep them in place.
In
sixteenth century, corsets became all
rage for women, and these remained
main items of breast control and enhancement for several centuries - not just for
effect they had on
breasts but also for
slimming effect they had on
waist. However, as
centuries went on, corsets became more and more restrictive until it got to
point where they were damaging
internal organs of those that squeezed themselves in to them.
In 1889, a corset-maker known as Herminie Cadolle invented a garment that supported
breasts in
more traditional way that we know today - by
shoulders. This was followed several years later by
patenting of
"breast supporter" by Marie Tucek, a garment that was fashioned very like
bras of today. Then, in 1912
word brassiere was included for
first time in
Oxford dictionary, and rest is indeed history.
Of course
bra has changed enormously over
years, having been transformed from something that resembled a couple of small sacks with attached straps to
wild and sexy lingerie that we see for sale today. In days long gone, bras were a necessity and that's all they were. However, over
past century all that has changed; Hollywood icons, world-famous supermodels, and top designers have helped to turn
simple bra in to a sexy, figure-enhancing garment that makes us feel as good as it can make us look.
You can now get all sorts of bras, from full-figure bras and nursing bras to backless bras and push-up bras. Whatever type of look you are trying to achieve, there is certain to be a bra type that will serve
purpose. Your breasts can be minimized, maximized, pushed up, shoved out, and even inflated at
touch of a button!
