Settling - Newborn – 6 Months

Unless your baby’s unusually co-operative, prepare yourself for some crying – it’s useful to have someone else there to support you.

1.Wrap your baby firmly, but not tightly, in a small blanket or pram sheet, covering their hands to help them feel more secure and prevent them from catching themselves inrepparttar face if they flail around. 2.Place them in their cot on their side so that they’re looking away from you (avoid eye contact), and with their feet close torepparttar 146700 end ofrepparttar 146701 cot. Remember that this isn’trepparttar 146702 position that they’ll sleep in – you’ll turn them onto their back once they’re asleep. Inrepparttar 146703 meantime, they won’t come to any harm, as you’ll be inrepparttar 146704 room with them at all times. Look atrepparttar 146705 clock and make a note ofrepparttar 146706 time. You’re going to give them 15 minutes to settle. 3.They’ll probably have started crying by now. Place one hand on their shoulder and gently stroke their back or pat their bottom gently withrepparttar 146707 other hand. They’ll probably continue to cry. 4.If, after 15 minutes, they’re still crying and showing no signs of settling, pick them up and give them a cuddle (don’t rock them to sleep – remember this is what you are trying to avoid). 5.Once they’ve calmed down, put them back in their cot, facingrepparttar 146708 other way this time, and try another 15 minute period of settling. Put one hand on their shoulder and pat or stroke them, as before. If they start to quieten, take your hand away –repparttar 146709 idea is for your baby to settle itself. 6.Once your baby is soundly asleep, roll them gently onto their back, loosenrepparttar 146710 wrapping and leave them. 7.If your baby is still crying, pick them up, cuddle them, and start again.

The most important thing is persistence. New routines take time, but just think how much more enjoyable parenthood will be when you are getting a good nights sleep.

Settling 6 – 12 months

Again, it will really help if you have support. With this technique your baby will never be left alone crying for more that ten minutes at a time. Are you ready? Well here goes!

1.Lie your baby inrepparttar 146711 cot on their back. Ensure that their feet are atrepparttar 146712 end ofrepparttar 146713 bed and tell them “It’s time to sleep now”. Leaverepparttar 146714 room and wait for two minutes. You want to give you babyrepparttar 146715 chance to fall asleep by themselves. As soon as they realise that they’re alone it is likely that they will start to protest. If they don’t settle within 2 minutes, then go back in. 2.Roll them on their side, facing away from you. Put a hand on their shoulder and keep patting their bottom or upper thigh gently withrepparttar 146716 other hand. Do this for two minutes, repeatingrepparttar 146717 words “It’s time to sleep now” in a gentle and soothing voice. Ifrepparttar 146718 baby us still protesting after two minutes, then leaverepparttar 146719 room, and wait out side, this time for four minutes. 3.If they still haven’t settled, go back in and try settling them, this time for four minutes. Next time, it’ll be six minutes, then eight minutes and finally ten minutes. 4.Inrepparttar 146720 unlikely event that afterrepparttar 146721 ten minute session they still haven’t settled then pick them out ofrepparttar 146722 cot, give them a cuddle, calm them (making sure you don’t rock them to sleep), and when they have settled repeatrepparttar 146723 process.

You will notice that your child’s crying will reach a peak, and then it will tail off, often very quickly, until they eventually settle themselves off to sleep.

As has been indicated throughout this article, repparttar 146724 key to success is perseverance. If you follow this routine torepparttar 146725 letter then within 3 – 10 days your baby should be sleeping throughrepparttar 146726 night, and be able to put themselves back to sleep, should they waken.

Good luck and happy sleeping!

Baby Yoga and Me

Written by Lucy Curran

Continued from page 1

The stimulation that babies receive doing yoga releases endorphins inrepparttar brain, and so they clearly glow after a session, just as we do after a turn atrepparttar 146699 gym. It was great to know he felt so cared for.

As time went on, our classes did become more adventurous. The stretches we learned started to actively include our babies (they are fabulous weights!) and we all became far less inhibited, and felt happy to move ontorepparttar 146700 more complex movements.

To calmrepparttar 146701 babies, Sue introduced music intorepparttar 146702 classes, which soothed them no end – in allrepparttar 146703 time I’ve been going now, I don’t think we’ve ever had a baby have to be taken out for crying. After Harry’s bath, I often do yoga with him at home now, andrepparttar 146704 heat of my hands andrepparttar 146705 slow, rhythmic nature ofrepparttar 146706 movements send him to sleep with much greater ease than a simple cuddle and a song tape ever could. He started sleeping throughrepparttar 146707 night months before a lot of other babies that we know, and I’m in no doubt that that has sonething to do with our yoga.

Being an enthusiast now, I’ve read up onrepparttar 146708 later benefits of what baby yoga can do and I’m excited. It’s clear fromrepparttar 146709 fact he rolled early that Harry has good spatial awareness, and plenty of confidence in what his body is capable of. When we took him for his eight-month check my health visitor told me he will miss out crawling stage – his spine is strong, and having been made aware ofrepparttar 146710 limitations of his body through yoga, he doesn’t need to go throughrepparttar 146711 exploration that crawling allows.

As well asrepparttar 146712 very evident physical benefits of baby yoga, it’s also been a lifesaver for me. On maternity leave I was a bit of a lonely mum, and now I have something of a network. Size ten again and happy, there is never a morning goes by when Harry and I do not have a play date. It’s turned things around. I think ill go downrepparttar 146713 gym tomorrow…
