Written by Steven Presar

If you have Windows XP, you may check your hard drive by going to MY COMPUTER, clicking onrepparttar drive in question and then going torepparttar 107671 FILE menu and selecting PROPERTIES. Underrepparttar 107672 TOOLS tab isrepparttar 107673 error-checking utility.

Many commercial utility software packages provide a variety of disk-checking and repair tools. LIUtilities’ SpeedUpMyPC and Norton SystemWorks suite by Symantec are two ofrepparttar 107674 more popular utility packages.

Buffing Your Computer System

Oncerepparttar 107675 computer has been checked out and cleaned up, a good defragmentation session can tune it up further. Operating systems tend to fragment and scatter files aroundrepparttar 107676 hard drive as they are used, causing slower performance over time becauserepparttar 107677 system has to look all overrepparttar 107678 drive for those file parts. Defragmentingrepparttar 107679 drive puts everything back together.

Windows has a built-in Disk Defragmenter program onrepparttar 107680 SYSTEM TOOLS menu, and many ofrepparttar 107681 non-Microsoft utility programs mentioned above also provide a defragmenter option. If you find that your computer keeps startingrepparttar 107682 process over and over, try booting your computer in “Safe Mode” to turn off all programs before trying to runrepparttar 107683 Defragmenter again.

Microsoft’s Safe Mode is a Windows diagnostics mode. When you startrepparttar 107684 computer in Safe mode, onlyrepparttar 107685 specific components that are needed to run your computer’s operating system are loaded. Safe mode does not load software applications automatically and does not allow some functions, such as connecting torepparttar 107686 Internet. Under Safe Mode, you are running your computer’s Windows operating system at its most basic level.

To activate Microsoft’s Safe Mode, power-up your computer. Watch for a blank black screen. When you see "Starting Windows," immediately pressrepparttar 107687 F8 key. Windows then proceeds to start in Safe Mode.

If you are running under Windows XP, Click START, and then click RUN. A RUN dialog box appears. Type “msconfig” (do not typerepparttar 107688 “) and then click OK. The System Configuration Utility appears. Selectrepparttar 107689 BOOT.INI tab then checkrepparttar 107690 "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK.

The time needed to perform all of these system checks and cleanup procedures will vary, depending onrepparttar 107691 size of your hard drive andrepparttar 107692 amount of data stored on it. Each task could take just 10 minutes or so, but it is not unheard of for it to take several hours to complete all of them. If you would rather be sleeping or playing softball, you can automate many ofrepparttar 107693 cleaning chores withrepparttar 107694 Maintenance Wizard or, in some later versions of Windows, repparttar 107695 Scheduled Tasks function. Both are found inrepparttar 107696 System Tools area.

Here are three most important steps that you must do to protect your valuable computer files:

~ Regularly Backup Key Files: Save valuable computer data on a separate drive, CD, or disk, such as a Zip(R) disk. After files are backed up, removerepparttar 107697 disks fromrepparttar 107698 computer and keep them in a safe place removed from your computer.

~ Install and Update Anti-Virus Software: Make sure any anti-virus program runs fromrepparttar 107699 start menu and updatesrepparttar 107700 program on a regular basis.

~ Carefully Review all email Attachments: Don't open e-mail attachments unless you knowrepparttar 107701 source. Also, to minimizerepparttar 107702 potential impact of an email attachment to your hard drive, transfer attachments to a CD or Zip(R) disk before opening.

Taking care of your computer with a little regular maintenance may just pay you dividends downrepparttar 107703 road.

Troubleshoot Windows with Task Manager

Continued from page 1

Onrepparttar Process tab, you can identify processes that are consuming a lot of processor time. Click twice onrepparttar 107670 CPU column heading to sortrepparttar 107671 CPU column sorepparttar 107672 processes hoggingrepparttar 107673 most CPU time on top. You can sortrepparttar 107674 "Mem Usage" columnrepparttar 107675 same way.

Onrepparttar 107676 Application tab, if you right click onrepparttar 107677 name of an application and, inrepparttar 107678 popup menu that appears, choose "Go To Process", Task Manager will openrepparttar 107679 Processes tab and highlightrepparttar 107680 process that runsrepparttar 107681 application. Onrepparttar 107682 Processes tab, if you right-click onrepparttar 107683 name of a process, you can choose "SetPriority" and promoterepparttar 107684 priority ofrepparttar 107685 process you need (or demoterepparttar 107686 priority of a different process to free up some resources).

If you go torepparttar 107687 Application tab and shut down an application, you will shut down any processes related to that application. Or, you might choose to shut down a background process that you can identify. To shut down an application or process, click on it's name inrepparttar 107688 list to highlight it, then click onrepparttar 107689 End Task button.

Onrepparttar 107690 Processes tab, if you right click onrepparttar 107691 name of a process, you can choose "End Process Tree" to killrepparttar 107692 process and any sub-processes started byrepparttar 107693 process.

Task Manager can also be used for troubleshooting. If an application freezes up, you can open Task Manager and shut downrepparttar 107694 application. Ifrepparttar 107695 entire system freezes up, you can use Task Manager to shut down a process that is hogging allrepparttar 107696 CPU time or memory.

If you spend some time monitoring your computer with task Manager, eventually you will become familiar withrepparttar 107697 processes that commonly run. Then, when you see an unfamiliar process, you can do a little investigation to make sure it's not a virus. For example, if you see msblast.exe inrepparttar 107698 process list, your computer is infected withrepparttar 107699 Blaster virus. You might be able to detect and eliminate a new virus before an antivirus update is available.
