Reading books with their children is one of most important things that parents can do to help their children become readers.

From earliest days, talk with your child about what you are reading. You might point to pictures and name what is in them. When he is ready, have him do same. Later on, as you read stories, read slowly and stop now and then to think aloud about what you've read. Whichever design you choose, use inexpensive stain-repellant area rugs that can be easily replaced when you want to update design. You'll want a room that your child can grow into.
