OsteoporosisWritten by Dr. Michael L. Johnson
Continued from page 1 process of bone formation, bone cells use proteins and other building blocks to produce a substance known as collagen. Collagen fibers develop quickly to form an organic mesh, or net, that calcium, phosphorus and numerous other minerals attach to. Over a period of days and weeks (and through a crystallization process involving substitution and addition of various minerals) mixture of different minerals attaching to this organic net changes, producing finished product called hydroxyapatite crystals. These hydroxyapatite crystals are what makes bone so hard. It is easy to appreciate that bone is much more than just calcium. There are three ways that strong bones are dependent on proper nourishment: 1) To keep bone cells healthy and active. 2) To supply variety of important nutritional building blocks needed to form organic matrix of bone. 3) To supply complex of minerals that need to be placed on that organic net to make up finished, hardened component of bone known as hydroxyapatite crystals. With proper nourishment, a healthy lifestyle, and favorable genetics, healthy bones can last a lifetime!

As a Board Certified Chiropractic Neurologist, I take a different approach to treatment and prevention of neck pain. After a thorough neurological examination, I determine which part of nervous system is not functioning properly. In many neck pain patients, I find a high mesencephalic output. There are three parts to brain stem: top, middle and lower. The mesencephalon is top part of brain stem. A high output of mesencephalon will cause an increased pulse and heart rate, inability to sleep, or a waking, fitful sleep. Other symptoms might include urinary tract infections, increased warmth and sweating, and sensitivity to light. Along with a high mesencephalic output, neck pain patient may present with a decreased output of cerebellum. The cerebellum is in back part of brain. It controls all of involuntary spinal musculature. No matter what condition, it is imperative that chiropractic neurologist performs a thorough and comprehensive exam to determine exact nature of patient’s condition.
