Mechanical Seals for Zero LeakageWritten by Thomas Yoon
Continued from page 1
Stationary Component The stationary ring is usually made of stainless steel, although there are some made of ceramic or similar hard materials. The axial surface is also highly polished. At circumference of stationary piece, a rubber o-ring will be installed to seal against water leak through pump housing. Spring The spring(s) is installed around shaft and rotates with rotating component. The purpose of spring is to press rotating component of mechanical seal against stationary component so that matching surfaces are in contact with each other axially to shaft. Because axial rubbing surfaces in contact are very highly polished, there is almost no leak there. Water does not leak through pump housing opening because of o-ring pressed between stationary component and pump housing. Water will also not leak through shaft because of o-ring in rotating component gripping against shaft. So, if there is a leak in a mechanical seal of a pump, look for sources of leak in those 3 places. Surely one of them is not sealing properly. | | Simple But Powerful Centrifugal ChillersWritten by Thomas Yoon
Continued from page 1
The lubrication of shaft bearings must be done within chiller itself. Oil passages and shaft driven pumps (with motor driven pumps at startup) is made for lubrication. The oil will find their way to condenser and has to be extracted back to lubrication system. Usually there will be an eductor system to suck back oil to oil sump. Centrifugal chillers are usually designed for low-pressure refrigerant like R-123a. These chillers sometimes surge when running, and they are very sensitive to sudden changes in loads. Therefore modern centrifugal chillers make use of electronic microprocessors to control various parameters and timing in order to run smoothly. Indeed, when everything is perfect, centrifugal chiller is capable of extremely smooth operation. Folks, be cool! "Gain CONFIDENCE and ACHIEVE your life's DREAMS!"
