The Windows Indexing Service uses a fair amount of disk space (approximately 30%repparttar amount ofrepparttar 107641 original files). Ifrepparttar 107642 shared directories onrepparttar 107643 network are large, it can consume a considerable portion ofrepparttar 107644 computer's memory and processor cycles. There are several options for configuringrepparttar 107645 Indexing Service to improve performance.

To configurerepparttar 107646 Indexing Service select "Start | Settings | Control Panel | Administrative Tools" and openrepparttar 107647 "Computer Management" application. Inrepparttar 107648 left pane ofrepparttar 107649 "Computer Management" window, clickrepparttar 107650 plus sign next to "Services and Applications", then right-click onrepparttar 107651 "Indexing Service" icon. Inrepparttar 107652 popup menu, select "All Tasks | Tune Performance". The "Indexing Service Usage" dialog box will appear.

The "Indexing Service Usage" dialog box provides three radio button options that let Windows setrepparttar 107653 Indexing Service Performance for you; "Used often", "Used occasionally", and "Never Used". If you want to provide your own custom setting, setrepparttar 107654 "Customize" radio button and click onrepparttar 107655 "Customize..." button. The "Desired Performance" dialog box will appear.

The "Desired Performance" dialog box contains two slider controls. The "Indexing" slider control sets how quicklyrepparttar 107656 catalog will be updated. Adjust it torepparttar 107657 left to reducerepparttar 107658 amount of system resources used to updaterepparttar 107659 catalog. The "Querying" slider control sets how quickly search results will be returned. Adjusting it torepparttar 107660 left will reducerepparttar 107661 amount of system resources used, but search results will take longer to return.

You can also controlrepparttar 107662 Indexing Service by configuringrepparttar 107663 specific folders to be indexed. When you click onrepparttar 107664 "Indexing Service" icon inrepparttar 107665 "Computer Management" window, repparttar 107666 right pane should list a catalog named "System". When you double-click on a catalog, you will find three folders, "Directories", "Properties", and "Query The Catalog".

Note: If Internet Information Server (IIS) is installed on your computer, you should also see a catalog named "Web". The Web catalog scansrepparttar 107667 C:Inetpub directory.

To add a folder to be indexed, right-click onrepparttar 107668 "Directories" folder and select "New | Directory" inrepparttar 107669 popup menu. Inrepparttar 107670 "Add Directory" dialog box that appears, enterrepparttar 107671 path ofrepparttar 107672 new directory. To remove a folder, left-click onrepparttar 107673 "Directories" folder to displayrepparttar 107674 list of directories inrepparttar 107675 right pane. Then left-click on a directory and select "Delete" inrepparttar 107676 popup menu.
