Integrating Advertising into Your Web Design

A secret few advertising designers know is thatrepparttar graphic that will getrepparttar 132455 most attention is a picture of a human face. People are genetically predisposed to look at a human face in their view area. Try it yourself while you're browsingrepparttar 132456 web. If a webpage has a human face on it, that'srepparttar 132457 first thing you will look at.

Where to position ads on your webpage

To discuss where to place ads on a webpage, we need to divide a page into five sections as listed below.

1. Header 2. Footer 3. Left Margin 4. Right Margin 5. Center column

Note: There is a sixth area ofrepparttar 132458 webpage which isrepparttar 132459 popup window. There are many forms of popup windows; pop-over, pop-under, delayed, and exit. The polite way to use popup windows isrepparttar 132460 self-closing popup window. Because of popup window blockers, popup windows are much less effective today, and, from my own experience, when I tried using popup windows, repparttar 132461 page views on my website dropped by 50 percent.

The most common position to place advertising banners is inrepparttar 132462 header section of a webpage. Web users have programmed themselves to ignore banners in this position. The response rate of banners inrepparttar 132463 header section of webpages has dropped to something like .0001 percent. The Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) has tried to overcome this problem by defining giant (what I call "battleship size") banners. I don't know of any studies that show this works.

Using banners inrepparttar 132464 head section of your webpage is a waste of processor time, but most webpages still use them. Making a sale this way is a long shot. Banners inrepparttar 132465 footer section of a webpage are even less responsive.

Actually Web users have programmed themselves to ignore all advertising onrepparttar 132466 web. However, from my own experience, you can get some response from ads inrepparttar 132467 left and right margins of a webpage. Most websites are designed withrepparttar 132468 menu inrepparttar 132469 left margin and possibly ads inrepparttar 132470 right margin. This means ifrepparttar 132471 user has a low resolution display, depending uponrepparttar 132472 width ofrepparttar 132473 webpage, repparttar 132474 advertising may be offrepparttar 132475 screen.

Place your menu inrepparttar 132476 right margin and userepparttar 132477 left margin for advertising. This placesrepparttar 132478 user with a low resolution display inrepparttar 132479 positon of having to scroll to viewrepparttar 132480 menu. Too bad. They should get a bigger display. Website revenue comes first.

The most responsive position to put your ads is inrepparttar 132481 center column ofrepparttar 132482 webpage along withrepparttar 132483 content. As visitors are readingrepparttar 132484 article onrepparttar 132485 webpage, they come uponrepparttar 132486 ad. It's unavoidable.

If you imaginerepparttar 132487 center column of your webpage divided into three parts; top, middle, and bottom, repparttar 132488 most responsive position for your ad will be right inrepparttar 132489 middle. Asrepparttar 132490 visitors are readingrepparttar 132491 article onrepparttar 132492 webpage, they are forced to look atrepparttar 132493 ad as they continue torepparttar 132494 lower part ofrepparttar 132495 article. This might be a little annoying torepparttar 132496 reader, but let's hope your content is worth that slight annoyance.

I would recommend placing your ad atrepparttar 132497 bottom ofrepparttar 132498 center column. As visitors readrepparttar 132499 article onrepparttar 132500 webpage, they end up looking at your ad. This is almost as effective as placingrepparttar 132501 ad inrepparttar 132502 middle ofrepparttar 132503 column, and a lot less annoying torepparttar 132504 reader.

As you can see, how you integrate advertising into your webpages has a major impact on your ability to produce revenue from your website. Poor ad integration will cause visitors to click away. Proper integration can make your website highly profitable. But, ad positon is notrepparttar 132505 only determining factor, don't forgetrepparttar 132506 ratio of ads to content, ad management, and ad type relative to response rate.

Choosing the correct keywords for a site

Written by Sumantra Roy

Continued from page 1

Once you have added allrepparttar keywords inrepparttar 132453 right pane which are applicable for your site, click onrepparttar 132454 next keyword inrepparttar 132455 left pane which is applicable for your site. Once again, WordTracker will display a list of keywords inrepparttar 132456 right pane which containrepparttar 132457 keyword you had clicked on inrepparttar 132458 left pane. Again, copyrepparttar 132459 keywords inrepparttar 132460 right pane which are applicable for your site and paste them inrepparttar 132461 first column of your spreadsheet. Also, copyrepparttar 132462 figures present inrepparttar 132463 Count column and paste them inrepparttar 132464 second column besiderepparttar 132465 corresponding keywords. Repeat this process for each ofrepparttar 132466 keywords inrepparttar 132467 left pane.

Step 5: Once you have finished with allrepparttar 132468 keywords inrepparttar 132469 left pane, press your browser's Back button a number of times until WordTracker again displaysrepparttar 132470 text box which asks you to type in a keyword. Type inrepparttar 132471 second keyword in your original list (i.e. "travel to Australia"), click onrepparttar 132472 "Proceed >>" button and repeat Step 4. Do this for each ofrepparttar 132473 keywords that you developed in Step 1.

Step 6: Go to AltaVista. Search forrepparttar 132474 first keyword that is present in your spreadsheet using exact match search (i.e. you should wraprepparttar 132475 keyword in quotes, i.e. you should type a quotation mark before typingrepparttar 132476 keyword and a quotation mark after typing it). AltaVista will returnrepparttar 132477 number of sites which are relevant to that keyword. Add this number torepparttar 132478 third column ofrepparttar 132479 spreadsheet inrepparttar 132480 same row in whichrepparttar 132481 keyword is present. Repeat this process for each ofrepparttar 132482 keywords present in your spreadsheet. Once you have done that, your first column will containrepparttar 132483 keywords, your second column will showrepparttar 132484 popularity ofrepparttar 132485 keywords and your third column will containrepparttar 132486 number of sites you are competing against to get a high ranking for those keywords.

Now it's time to calculaterepparttar 132487 KEI!

Step 7: The Keyword Effectiveness Index isrepparttar 132488 square ofrepparttar 132489 popularity of a keyword multiplied by 1000 and divided byrepparttar 132490 number of sites which appear in AltaVista for that keyword. It is designed to measure which keywords are worth optimizing your site for. Higherrepparttar 132491 KEI, betterrepparttar 132492 keyword. Howrepparttar 132493 formula forrepparttar 132494 KEI is arrived at is beyondrepparttar 132495 scope of this article. If you want to know, send a blank email to mailto:kei@1stSearchRanking.com

If you had usedrepparttar 132496 spreadsheet file that I created for you (see Step 2), you won't need to enterrepparttar 132497 formula for calculatingrepparttar 132498 KEI yourself. The KEI would be automatically calculated for yourepparttar 132499 moment you enterrepparttar 132500 values in columns 2 and 3. You can go straight to Step 8.

In case you didn't downloadrepparttar 132501 file, here's how you can calculaterepparttar 132502 KEI.

I am assuming that you have createdrepparttar 132503 spreadsheet columns inrepparttar 132504 way I recommended in Step 3 and that you are using Microsoft Excel. If you using some other spreadsheet program, you will need to adjustrepparttar 132505 formula torepparttar 132506 requirements of your spreadsheet program. Click on cell D2. Type inrepparttar 132507 following exactly as it is shown:

=IF(C2<>0,B2^2/C2*1000,B2^2*1000)

Then click onrepparttar 132508 Copy button to copyrepparttar 132509 formula, select allrepparttar 132510 cells in column 4 which have keywords associated with them and pressrepparttar 132511 Paste button to pasterepparttar 132512 formula. The KEI for each keyword will be displayed.

Step 8: Use your spreadsheet program's Sort feature to sortrepparttar 132513 rows in descending order ofrepparttar 132514 KEI. In Excel 97, you would click onrepparttar 132515 Data menu, click onrepparttar 132516 Sort menu item, choose KEI fromrepparttar 132517 drop-down combo box named "Sort by", click onrepparttar 132518 "Descending" option next to it, and then click on OK.

And guess what - that's it! You now knowrepparttar 132519 keywords which you should optimize your site for. You can now start optimizing your site one by one for each keyword, starting withrepparttar 132520 keyword withrepparttar 132521 highest KEI. Exactly how many ofrepparttar 132522 keywords you choose to optimize your site for largely depends onrepparttar 132523 amount of time that you can spare from your normal business activities. But whateverrepparttar 132524 number of keywords that you target, it obviously makes sense to go forrepparttar 132525 most effective keywords first.

Tying uprepparttar 132526 loose ends:

The number of related keywords that WordTracker displays inrepparttar 132527 trial version is limited. In order to get allrepparttar 132528 keywords which are related torepparttar 132529 keywords you had developed in Step 1, you would need to subscribe to WordTracker's paid service. We highly recommend that you do subscribe to WordTracker's paid service as otherwise, you will miss out on a lot of keywords that can prove to be extremely valuable to you.
