Hungary’s Bartok Legacy

Ah, Mozart. The concerto sounded like a dance as much asrepparttar Bartók pieces did. Written inrepparttar 105326 three-movement style ofrepparttar 105327 day, Wolfgang's concerto started "allegro," light and moderately fast, then relaxed in an "andante" second movement, then sped up again forrepparttar 105328 third movement - in this case "allegretto," accelerating to "presto" forrepparttar 105329 energetic finale. This translates into "dancing inrepparttar 105330 parlor, refreshing ourselves with a glass of wine, and then dancing out onrepparttar 105331 lawn." The concerto was played by an ensemble of strings and winds fromrepparttar 105332 orchestra, with no percussion. The alternation between ensemble play and solo piano was smooth and precise and didn't breakrepparttar 105333 flow ofrepparttar 105334 music. We've all heard Mozart's wonderfully identifiable sound; I describe it as "All Europe in a good mood." I even saw some ofrepparttar 105335 orchestra's musicians swaying torepparttar 105336 gentle rhythms when they weren't playing. Mozart will do that to you. In my mind his music evokes elegant gatherings of happy Hapsburg aristocrats who don't care how hungryrepparttar 105337 even-tempered peasants are.

The Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra was formed in 1923 asrepparttar 105338 Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra. Bartók's "Dance Suite" was commissioned that year in commemoration ofrepparttar 105339 official union ofrepparttar 105340 adjoining cities of Buda and Pest (probably because no one likedrepparttar 105341 name "Pest"). Zoltán Kocsis became conductor and music director in 1997 after 14 years headingrepparttar 105342 Budapest Festival Orchestra. More information is available atrepparttar 105343 Philharmonic's excellent website, www.hunphilharmonic.org.hu/index.asp?lang=EN. This link should get you torepparttar 105344 English-language version (the one without allrepparttar 105345 accent marks).

Hearingrepparttar 105346 orchestra play Antonin Dvorak's 'Symphony No. 3 in E Flat Major', and readingrepparttar 105347 program notes, I couldn't help thinking of wine tasting. The Symphony is said to contain influences of Richard Wagner (a really "big" cabernet), and Dvorak's work in general reportedly hints at his admiration for Beethoven (a complex burgundy), but what I tasted most in this piece wasrepparttar 105348 peppery zinfandel of Tchaikovsky. The first movement contained powerful horns and sweeping strings, and with its constant shifts from intense to calm and back, it reminded me ofrepparttar 105349 1812 Overture withoutrepparttar 105350 cannons. The movement ended big with a rather climactic final chord reminiscent ofrepparttar 105351 Swan Lake ballet suite. Like wine tasting, it's all rather subjective: "Did you tasterepparttar 105352 chocolate and blackberries inrepparttar 105353 finish?" Yeah.

Duringrepparttar 105354 pause, Maestro Kocsis (now only conducting) leaned back againstrepparttar 105355 podium rail

Pepper Vega, played by Karin Denise, is a well trained singer/comedienne. Her timing is sharp and her personality vivid enough to be memorable. Her husband, Johnny Vega, Mr. Big's favorite comic, played by Ted Wallek, keepsrepparttar show zipping along with fast paced banter, jokes, and colorful tiffs with Pepper.

Duringrepparttar 105324 main course, Frankie Marone sings a smooth rendition of "Mack The Knife", tells everyone thatrepparttar 105325 Lasagna's never got along withrepparttar 105326 Pizzas, andrepparttar 105327 Spaghettis never got along with anybody! He invites allrepparttar 105328 Don's to stand up while goombas holding machine guns flank a life-sized cutout of Warren Beatty from "Bonnie and Clyde". The keyboardist, Michael Dowe, takes his cues fromrepparttar 105329 action, lending a sense of authenticity and drama.

I hadrepparttar 105330 Salmon with Honey Basil Sauce, and much to Gustav Mauler's credit, repparttar 105331 fish was fresh, flaky and moist. The sauce was tangy with a hint of sweetness. My new family members atrepparttar 105332 Antipasto table were very pleased with their entrées. Beer, wine and alcoholic beverages are extra.

"So it all started withrepparttar 105333 BadAssio Brothers", Frankie tellsrepparttar 105334 crowd who are well into their main courses. "I need some help up here." He scansrepparttar 105335 diners and walks over to a beautiful, young woman who he coaxes and cajoles up on stage.

"Your name?"

"Yvonne."

"So, Yvonne, Where are you from?"

"Russia. I'm here celebrating my divorce!"

The guests are now in full party mode; they cheer and applaud. Eventually they discover that Yvonne is not just an accidental tourist, she is a long-legged, professional dancer who adds more spice to an already hot line-up. Between dinner and dessert guests find themselves singing and dancingrepparttar 105336 Tarantella.

Homemade Tiramisu is served and champagne is poured asrepparttar 105337 long anticipated moment arrives—Mr. Big,repparttar 105338 Godfather of Las Vegas makes his grand entrance. Mr. Big, who is sometimes played by Ben Morgan, repparttar 105339 show's producer, or by a guest, is thrilled withrepparttar 105340 party. There is more tongue-in-cheek mobster humor, vaudevillian jokes and singing. Love is inrepparttar 105341 air.

Afterrepparttar 105342 show, guests can take pictures and chat withrepparttar 105343 actors.
