goes to trash. Quality of website I look for glaring typos, English mistakes, excessive fla shy banners, broken images, or ever infamous animated Under Construction gifs. Format of linkI usually look at source code of links page to make sure that I will be receiving honest inbound backlinks. Does site use rel=nofollow or external redirects for their outbound links? If so, they won't benefit you at all (SEO-wise) unless link gets many human clickthroughs. Are they willing to put link in a "real" page of their site? If they are willing to place your link on a content page, then they are definitely my valued link partner. If I see their phone number in request email... Then I'd classify them as a valueable link partner. The same goes to your request emails: always include your name and phone number in order to be trusted. That's it for me. As you can see, I've only mentioned PageRank once. I believe that as long as a site has quality, it has a good potential (PageRank or otherwise) and is worthy to trade link with. Finally, although these are good criterias to stick to in order to identify good link partners when receiving requests, don't forget to see if you are adhering to these when you are one sending requests!

Of course guys marketing these products are going to defend them. Who can blame them really except to say a good product doesn't need to be defended. If there's nothing wrong with product or process then why does it need to be defended? Can smartpages get your domain banned? Absolutely and even product creators advise to never host smartpages on your main domain. They advise you to upload smartpages to another domain with a different webhost on a different IP address. If smartpages are so totally harmless and ethical then why do you need to hide them like this? Are smartpages still effective? To a lesser extent yes they can still be used as part of a search engine optimization policy. A far better policy however is to simply put useful, keyword rich content on your site and enjoy lots of legitimate search engine traffic for years to come.
