Great Lakes Sonnig CruiseWritten by Kriss Hammond

That evening, while dining in Main Salon, C. Columbus barks a honk and we are off across Lake Michigan to Traverse City. There is only one sitting at huge restaurant and I immediately make new friends with Sonnig, which in German means sunny. The blond, lithe German lass is a delightful rainbow of sunny smiles, and I later learn her name is but a nickname; everyone on board loves her fresh, energetic style. The food is fantastic in restaurant or Main Salon, and wine cellar is superb. The Maitre d’ continuously circles two sides of restaurant making sure all guests are well received and satiated. He arrives at my table, clicks his heels, bows, and smiles. All crew members speak excellent English. Any special diets require a three week advance notice before sailing. Dining is casual — only Captain’s Welcome and Farewell Dinners call for something more formal — a cocktail dress for ladies and jacket and tie for gentlemen. C. Columbus also has Showtime/Lounge Bar for nightly entertainment by Allegro Band, and Palmgarten Bar off Sonnendeck (Sun Deck) on sixth deck is kept lively during day, as guests play games, listen to music, and are served drinks and casual dining. The Galleria is a cozy seating area. This brings me to overtone in this city; money. People here seem to be dripping with it; Looking, smelling, feeling like a million bucks. Heck, I felt underdressed in Jack In The Box this afternoon, but who's counting?. It's no surprise though, that this is a rich city. Not more than two miles from hotel is famous, or infamous depending on how you look at it, Del Mar Race Track which has been inspiring women to wear ridiculously crazy hats for years. Now if there's one thing I've noticed, it's that every great city has a song. New York has one, Chicago, San Francisco even. Does San Diego? No. But there is one for Del Mar probably due to this famous track. Literally millions of people have come to this track that was started by Bing Crosby, and has been visited by all stars, past and present. Betty Grable has been there. Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, and all of other people who's pictures were on wall at Jimmy O's, one of three popular bars in downtown Del Mar. Night after night, beautiful people stumble out after last call, pleasantly greeted by Del Mar police to make sure everyone leaves in a sober manor.
