The mesotheleum helps protect organs by producing a special lubricating fluid that allows organs to move around. For example, this fluid makes it easier for lungs to move inside chest during breathing. The mesothelium of chest is called pleura and mesothelium of abdomen is known as peritoneum. The mesothelium of pericardial cavity (the "sac-like" space around heart) is called pericardium.
