Getting the Power to Control

Written by Thomas Yoon

Continued from page 1

Using electrical motors to drive gearing may be an excellent choice when cost is a consideration. Electrical wires can be laid more easily and electrical systems are relatively clean.

Use of hydraulics may be excellent where power and simplicity is important.

Most ofrepparttar actuators operate in a linear (straight line) manner. Hydraulic rams, and pneumatic diaphragms work in this manner. There are also some that are constructed to operate in a rotary manner.

Electrical motors normally operate in a rotary manner. However if a linear motion is needed, this can be obtained by means of spur gears, rack and pinion arrangements, crank and other means.

Actuators can providerepparttar 133424 power to move final control elements, but do they know when to stop?

A good control system will providerepparttar 133425 sensing and feedback loop to tellrepparttar 133426 actuator when to stop its actions.

Mechanical Seals for Zero Leakage

Written by Thomas Yoon

Continued from page 1

Stationary Component

The stationary ring is usually made of stainless steel, although there are some made of ceramic or similar hard materials. The axial surface is also highly polished. Atrepparttar circumference of repparttar 133423 stationary piece, a rubber o-ring will be installed to seal against water leak throughrepparttar 133424 pump housing.

Spring

The spring(s) is installed aroundrepparttar 133425 shaft and rotates withrepparttar 133426 rotating component. The purpose ofrepparttar 133427 spring is to pressrepparttar 133428 rotating component ofrepparttar 133429 mechanical seal againstrepparttar 133430 stationary component so thatrepparttar 133431 matching surfaces are in contact with each other axially torepparttar 133432 shaft.

Becauserepparttar 133433 axial rubbing surfaces in contact are very highly polished, there is almost no leak there. Water does not leak throughrepparttar 133434 pump housing opening because ofrepparttar 133435 o-ring pressed betweenrepparttar 133436 stationary component andrepparttar 133437 pump housing. Water will also not leak throughrepparttar 133438 shaft because ofrepparttar 133439 o-ring inrepparttar 133440 rotating component gripping againstrepparttar 133441 shaft.

So, if there is a leak in a mechanical seal of a pump, look for repparttar 133442 sources of leak in those 3 places. Surely one of them is not sealing properly.
