- To Terminus! Ordered John to taxi driver. The hotel Terminus was located at center town, opposite to railway station at corner of Independence Avenue. Large house plants decorated hall. It was a building of purest colonial style. Inside, atmosphere of Twenties was perpetuated. A large staircase of brown wood led to rooms, employees - flexible and trained - waxed it several times per day. The owner, an old and little vulgar settler, directed her staff with an iron hands. By derision, employees called her "tara shambo", as Madagascans named former colonists who were too late to take last boat to decolonization . Mrs. Morvan - her real name - was everywhere at same time. Like a sheepdog, she was ready to bark her sheep at least prank. It should be said that staff had of it attitude. Always dressed in white immaculate blouses, she had kept this subjected position which characterized relationship that natives had with their Masters during colonial times. All were bare footed. Their miserable wages guarantee calm and rest to establishment's customers.
A porter ran into lobby. He relieved twins of their two larger bags and invited them to follow him. John, climbing stairs, slipped on soaped steps.
