Chat RoomsWritten by Jesse S. Somer

I guess it’s good that bored people in our technological society have others to talk to. It means depressed adolescents may feel more connected to others and not so alone in world, maybe even having a positive effect on a possibly suicidal youth. But, I do feel this nonsensical chitchat is a sign of our next generation’s apathetic view of present reality in our postmodern culture. When reading text from a supposedly religious discussion, and hearing graphic use of derogatory terminology, I really have to wonder about present spiritual beliefs of my culture. I’m a true believer of concept that technology is here to further consciousness of humanity. Computers and Internet can help bring all of us in world together, thus evolving our society to next level. After looking at chat rooms, I feel there is a need to integrate more wisdom and compassion into our ‘new world’ generation. Having technology is great, but it is only one half of equation. To make Internet work properly, I think we need to instill same faith we have in science, into a faith that encompasses actual creators of information and communication tools-humanity itself. We seem to realize that we can invent many great things, but it looks like we’re missing out on great truth: that we ourselves are part of, and made of something great in itself: Life. (Existence!)

The huge array of smiley faces and other ‘emotional’ icons add another dimension to conversations. Some of smiley faces actually move (sticking their tongues out etc.) and there are many other symbols to express moment. E.g.: Show a little sun when it’s sunny in your neighborhood, flash a wilted rose when your love life isn’t going to well, put up a black sheep when you’re feeling disconnected from society. How about expressing your dream of a holiday by flashing up tropical island icon when you’re stuck in dreary office working hard on a cloudy day. They say a picture speaks a thousand words… Well I certainly don’t work for Microsoft but I guess Bill Gates and his buddies have made a few bucks because they’ve had a couple of good ideas. They’re helping world with their knowledge, and I reckon their MSN Messenger is another step forward in bringing Earth together into one world. Besides normal email format you can also have web cam and audio conversations, as well as sending files and photos instantly. It’s as sweet as that first time you kissed your honey bunny, well maybe not that sweet.
