Beginning With Phonics InstructionWritten by Mary Joyce
Continued from page 1
Much of teaching reading through phonics is using visual examples of words and letters that make up sounds. Use and create displays for child. Use labels and cards that have name of child’s toy so they can sound out word and match it with their favorite toy(s). Remember in beginning we are attempting to focus on ‘short’ vowel sounds. In summary, much of learning phonics is repetition so be creative with your teaching tools. Use a theme as much as you can. This is much more effective than haphazardly jumping around using non associated items. Be enthusiastic and reward small successes as your child works with your phonics activity and begins to learn to read and you’ll develop a skill that will grow rapidly within child.
