Peptides: Carnosine: (a peptide) is an antioxidant and free radical scavenger. Carnosine has been found to extendrepparttar life of human skin cells grown in culture. Long lived cells contain high levels of carnosine. The anti-ageing properties has been more recently linked, not so much with its antioxidant properties, but with its ability to protect against undesirable protein glycation and cross linking to normal macromolecules3.

Herbs: Garlic: a study4 in 1994 found garlic enhancedrepparttar 115878 long term growth ability of human skin cells to survive in culture. The researchers also found that garlic inhibitedrepparttar 115879 growth of cancer cells in culture, providingrepparttar 115880 first apparent evidence of both anti-ageing and anti- cancer effects of garlic.

Calorie Restriction: this has long been known to result inrepparttar 115881 slowing or retardation ofrepparttar 115882 ageing process. It has been confirmed in a number of studies with animals which have been shown to live longer when their dietary intakes were restricted. Calorie restriction without malnutrition isrepparttar 115883 only known manipulation which has been convincingly demonstrated to retard ageing in mammals.

How to Make a Friend of Silence

While we have very little control over noise inrepparttar environment at large, we do have control over our own private environment. This is where we begin to cultivate a friendship with silence.

* Make a conscious commitment torepparttar 115877 experience and appreciation of silence.

* Go for a walk in nature. Letrepparttar 115878 silence soothe your spirit.

* When you are alone in your residence turn off all noise making appliances. Begin with fifteen minutes of silence and gradually increaserepparttar 115879 duration.

* Learn how to meditate and schedule a ten minute meditation period once or twice a day. Gradually extend your meditation time.

* When driving to work turn off your car radio and drive in silence.

* Go camping for an night by yourself. Find a quiet campground where they don't allow people to blast their music without consideration for others. I usually go solo camping for one week each year to be alone and silent inrepparttar 115880 outdoors. It has become something I eagerly look forward to.

* Drive to a lake at sunset and rent a canoe. Paddle slowly alongrepparttar 115881 shoreline observingrepparttar 115882 silent sights andrepparttar 115883 gentle sounds of nature asrepparttar 115884 sun sets and darkness approaches.

* In silence listen to your breathing. Get a sense ofrepparttar 115885 silent rhythm of life.

* Just before retiring go outside and look up atrepparttar 115886 night sky. You will soon sense another universal rhythm so unfamiliar to many. Letrepparttar 115887 night sky andrepparttar 115888 darkness embrace you and calm you as you prepare for a night's rest.

* When you read a book, do so in silence. Many of us read to music or during television commercials. Try silence. You'll grow to love it.

Soon you will begin to cherishrepparttar 115889 periods of silence you have built into your day and long for more. You will quickly discover that you are becoming more relaxed and less tense even inrepparttar 115890 midst of our noisy world. You will have made an invaluable new friend in silence, a friend which can comfort, heal and soothe your spirit. What a gift you will have given yourself.

Be still and knowrepparttar 115891 restorative power of silence.
