Amos And Social Justice Part 1Written by Rev. Saundra L. Washington

The effect of this degenerating influence upon Hebrew society began to be felt in corruption of justice, in willful and luxurious living of upper classes, and in general decay of social unity. The wealthy exhibited no responsibility towards poor, and instead of relieving their economic distress, rich seemed hell-bent upon depriving their less fortunate counterparts of all their property. Within a short period of time, nation whose strength had subsisted in mass of its independent citizens was divided into dissolute rich and oppressed poor. In just a few short years poor had been reduced further to level of serfs, and when circumstances dictated, they were frequently sold into bondage by their masters for trivial considerations. The virtual disappearance of middle class marked a turning point in stability of Israel’s life. The impending downfall and utter collapse of Northern Kingdom is predominant theme of book of Amos. The basis for his prophecy is injustice and immorality expressed in political, economic, and religious life of nation. It was Amos’ conviction that Yahweh is a God of justice and His power over nations of earth is evidenced by fact that transgression of principles of justice and social righteousness will inevitably be followed by utter ruin and decay.

These are some serious things to consider. It’s easy to just say whatever you think God wants to hear, but He is not fooled by words. He knows heart. If you come to God, you must believe that He is God Almighty! And He rewards those who diligently seek Him. Have faith in Him! Psalm 62:5 says, “My expectation is in Lord.” We must be like woman who begged Jesus to deliver her daughter in Matthew 15. She said, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David” (She knew who He was and she was diligently seeking Him!) Jesus said to her, “Great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire” (Matthew 15:28). The past does not have to equal future. No matter how many disappointments you may have faced, He is still God and He loves you. He wants to perform miracles in your life but you must trust Him. His hand is moved by faith.
